Talking to Myself is a multimedia
music and theatre work for soprano, actor/musician, and live
musicians. It received its premiere in St. Louis and featured
soprano Debbie Lennon.
The origins of this piece
are rooted in the alienation and dehumanization of living on
the fringes of an urban society. In the role of a street musician,
the main character examines his disconnection with society and
seeks a path towards an understanding of his own individuality
independant of the influences and expectations of a commercial
world. It is at least in part an autobiographical story of the
artist coming of age. The search is represented in a journey
that the man travels upstream and across the mountains of his
imagination.
The video features projected
images I shot in New York around 34th street and in the subway
during the preparation for the New York performance of The Soul
of the Rock. Significantly different and unused footage from
these video tapes were later used in Subway.
